About this place

Dhauli Hill marks the Kalinga War battlefield (262–261 BCE). The white Shanti Stupa was built in 1972 via Indo-Japanese collaboration. Ashokan Rock Edicts at the base contain 14 major rock edicts inscribed in Brahmi script, recording Ashoka's remorse and conversion to Buddhism. According to Ashoka's own edict, 100,000 were killed and 150,000 taken captive in the war.
