Hirakud Dam (21°34'N 83°52'E) is built across the Mahanadi River, ~16 km from Sambalpur. Constructed 1947–1957, it is the world's longest earthen dam at 25.8 km (main dam + dykes). The reservoir is one of Asia's largest artificial lakes. Generates 347.5 MW of hydroelectric power. Designated a Ramsar Wetland in 2021.
