About this place
Gupteswar Cave represents one of Odisha's most spectacular cave shrines, situated within a massive limestone cavern accessible via 200 well-maintained stone stairs carved into hillside. Inside the cool dark sanctum, a massive Shiva lingam stands worshipped with daily rituals; local belief claims the lingam grows larger annually (geological/mineral deposition creates subtle size changes).
Why it matters
Ancient Shiva shrine; ever-growing Shiva lingam (mineral deposition); Ramayana exile legend; 200-step descent; 18-20°C constant cave temperature
Ancient (natural cave; temple installation predates recorded history; mentioned in medieval Odishan texts) · Natural limestone cave temple
