About this place
Satapada is a small village on the south-eastern lip of Chilika Lake where the lagoon meets the Bay of Bengal through a narrow tidal channel. It is the principal launching point for boat tours to spot the Irrawaddy dolphins (Orcaella brevirostris) for which Chilika is famous — one of only two lagoonal populations of this species in the world. Standard tours visit the sea-mouth, Nalabana bird sanctuary boundary, Rajhans Island sand bar, and dolphin viewing zones. Government OTDC ferries and registered private boats operate from the OTDC jetty.
