Jagannath Rath Yatra (Puri)

Grand Road (Bada Danda), PuriThu, 16 July 2026 – Sat, 25 July 2026

About this festival

Odisha's grandest festival — held ~60 km from Bhubaneswar in Puri. Lords Jagannath, Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra ride three towering hand-pulled chariots from the Shree Jagannath Temple along the Grand Road (Bada Danda) to the Gundicha Temple, drawing well over a million devotees. The return Bahuda Yatra is on 24 July. Bhubaneswar's own ISKCON (Nayapalli) and several neighbourhood temples hold their own smaller chariot processions the same day.

Traveller tip

~60 km / 1.5 hr from Bhubaneswar — take the early 06:00 train or drive before dawn; Grand Road is pedestrian-only. The chariot pull begins early afternoon. Can't make Puri? Bhubaneswar's ISKCON (Nayapalli) pulls its own smaller chariot from ~16:00 with free Mahaprasad.
